TIME REMINDER
This simulation is broken up into four 15-minute “weeks” representing one month in the life of a refugee family.
TASKS
You have five major tasks:
- Collect Transportation Passes (1 per family) when they arrive at your table.
- Make referrals for the Free Clinic at Community Healthcare for those who need medical attention.
- Educate students on the services you provide and the resources around the room.
- Give out cash for food, food vouchers, utility vouchers, and Head Start vouchers. Remember that you only have so many.
- Carry out Luck of the Draw cards and School Opportunity/Challenge Cards for students who received them.
Morality Alignment
TRUE GOOD = Honest, Charity-Focused people. You want to help!
RESPONSIBILITIES
- TRANSPORTATION PASSES
- Collect 1 pass per family per visit. Those without ANY transportation passes should be turned away.
- If a family needs more transportation passes but can’t afford them, you may give them a few (no more than 5 per family).
- Families that can afford it should be sent to Quik Cash to buy more transportation passes for $1 each.
- SHELTER FOR THE HOMELESS
- The Shah-Gurung (L) Family is currently staying in the Homeless Shelter. Their house was foreclosed last month.
- To provide a family (other than Family L) with shelter, they must present their eviction notice. If they don’t have it, you must turn them away.
- They may stay at the shelter on weekends and during the week, but if they are employed, they MUST go to work and children MUST go to school.
- Children may NOT be left at the shelter without an adult family member.
- You can only house 3 families at a time.
- Each family can only stay for 2 weeks – this includes the Shah-Gurung family.
- REFERRALS
- Make referrals to the Free Clinic at Community Healthcare for those who cannot afford it and/or do not have Health Insurance.
- Send students to appropriate services as needed. (i.e. if they need to apply for Health Insurance, send them to Social Services)
- DISTRIBUTE VOUCHERS TO NEEDY FAMILIES
- Record any cash or vouchers you give our on your Tracker.
- Use your discretion when giving out charity, you only have so much to give. You may give it all to one family, but then others could go hungry.
- Families may only receive one of each voucher PER MONTH. (Utility, Food, and Head Start)
- You have a small amount of cash and transportation passes to give to needy families. Be careful and don’t give them everything they need (Only give them 2 transportation passes if they say they need 5, or $10 if they need $20, etc.)
- Head Start vouchers are for one child age 1-5 (infants/toddlers) to receive a month of free daycare at Building Blocks Daycare.
- Do not give out all of your vouchers out in Week 1.
- LUCK OF THE DRAW & SCHOOL CHALLENGE CARDS
- If a person comes to you with either of the cards, do what if says and then keep the card.
REMINDERS:
- If someone has RED on their nametag, you may NOT speak English to them unless they have a translator present. YOU MAY MIME/GESTURE AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE (and so can they!)
- If someone has YELLOW on their nametag, you may only speak TEN words in English to them throughout your interaction unless they have a translator present. YOU MAY MIME/GESTURE AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE (and so can they!)
- THESE LANGUAGE BARRIERS DO NOT APPLY TO TRANSLATORS.
TL;DR:
Provide shelter for the homeless (as available), give out cash for food, utility vouchers, and Head Start (daycare) vouchers to those who need them most. You only have so many, so rationing is necessary. Provide childcare and refer people to other agencies to get them help.
