TIME REMINDER
This simulation is broken up into four 15-minute “weeks” representing one month in the life of a refugee family.
TASKS
You have three major tasks:
- Watch out for and respond to child neglect in the community.
- Collect truant youth and bring them to school.
- Place chronically neglected children in Foster Care.
Morality Alignment
LAWFUL GOOD = Honest, Trustworthy, and Strict with the Rules.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- TRANSPORTATION PASSES
- You do NOT collect transportation passes unless someone comes to the Police Department for help. If you are out-and-about they do NOT need a pass. When collecting passes, only take one per family.
- RESPOND TO CHILD NEGLECT
- You may notice or be told that a child is left at home alone. This is child neglect.
- On the first offense,
- Take the child from the home/daycare and take them with you to the Police Station.
- Alert the Police that a child is being neglected and that they need to find the parents.
- The parents may take the child home AFTER either you or the Police Officer lecture them about child neglect.
- On the second offense,
- Take the child from the home/daycare and take them with you to the Police Station.
- Alert the Police that a child is being neglected and that they need to find the parents. Tell the police to let the family know that their child has been taken into protective custody and will be placed in the foster care system.
- Find a nice family with their own children and ask them if they are willing to be Foster Parents. Offer to pay them $40 per week to house and take care of the child. The child will then act as a family member of the foster family and will not be able to return home for the rest of the simulation – their parents’ court date is next month.
- Return each week to any foster families to conduct “home checks” and pay them $40. Ensure that the family has enough food, the utilities are ON, and the mortgage/rent is paid. If the family fails the home check, place the foster child with another family. Do NOT remove other children from the home unless they are being neglected (left at home alone all week!)
COLLECT TRUANT YOUTH
- If any teenagers are at home or running errands when they should be in school, take them into your custody and deliver them to the school.
REMINDERS:
- If someone has RED on their nametag, you may NOT speak English to them unless they have a translator present. YOU MAY MIME/GESTURE AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE (and so can they!)
- If someone has YELLOW on their nametag, you may only speak TEN words in English to them throughout your interaction unless they have a translator present. YOU MAY MIME/GESTURE AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE (and so can they!)
TL;DR:
You will look out for the children in our community. Walk around looking for truant youth, small children left home alone while parents are at work, and take neglected children into your protective custody or foster care.
